Since October 1, 2020, prof. dr. Jachin Van Doninck is an 80% lecturer at the Faculty of Law and Criminology of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, where he teaches judicial law, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and private international law. The idea that law without a remedy is merely a paper sword sparked his interest in all matters related to adjudication early on. At the same time, he has been inspired by the idea of law as a social system that can provide cohesion and stability. He strongly believes in scientific collaboration, through joint research proposals, publications, and the educational exchange. Since his appointment at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Professor Van Doninck has conducted large-scale research in the field of civil procedure and ADR, co-founded the Digitalisation and Access research group (Dikè, https://dike.research.vub.be/), as well as the EUTOPIA-funded connected research community incubator on sustainable European private international law (SEPIL). He is faculty coordinator of the Civil and Procedural Law Master programme and, since the 2023-2024 academic year, faculty ombudsperson.
Jachin Van Doninck obtained his Master of laws at Ghent University (2001, magna cum laude) and studied European and German law at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Munich University Summer Training in German and European Law (MUST), with DAAD-scholarship, magna cum laude).
On 11 March 2020, he was awarded a Doctor of laws (Joint PhD) by Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, with a PhD thesis on the fate of unlawful evidence.
Since 2001, Jachin has also been practising law at the Brussels bar, where he specialises in counselling and advising on civil procedural matters and private international law. He is holder of the certificate to practice as a lawyer at the Court of Cassation ( www.advocass.be).
