Assistant Professor supports Capacity Building in Myanmar

China-EU School of Law (CESL) Assistant Professor Monika Prusinowska supported the Vis East Moot Foundation’s Capacity Building Project in Yangon, Myanmar. From 9 to 13 October 2017, she trained over 20 students from few of the Myanmar law schools. Her focus was on International Business Law, including international commercial arbitration and application of the CISG. “Students who joined this programme have limited access to the databases and books they need”, Monika Prusinowska tells. “In spite of difficulties, however, the students were very committed, hard-working and eventually - successful.”

Monika Prusinowska is an Assistant Professor at CESL since 2013 and she specialises in dispute resolution methods. Also since 2013, she has worked with the CESL Vis Moot team. “I chose to join the Capacity Building Project because from my CESL Vis experience I know how well the Vis Moot helps students to develop their legal research and writing skills, as well as critical thinking about law.”

The 10-day programme trained students in several fields of international law: sources of law, legal reasoning, the Convention on International Sale of Goods and international arbitration law and practice. The primary aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skills important for participation in the Vis Moot competition for students who have limited access to coaches, textbooks and other resources at their home universities. These knowledge and skills are also crucially important for the future practitioners in the area of international business law.

The annual Vis Moot competition is one of the most prestigious international pleading competitions for law students in the world. It focuses in particular on international commercial and arbitration law. In the course of preparation, students work intensively on a hypothetical arbitration case, prepare written submissions, and finally plead on behalf of their clients against teams from the other universities from all over the globe in front of top arbitration practitioners and law professors.
