CESL Vis Team Representing the China-EU School of Law in the Vis Moot Competition

This year again, the CESL Vis Moot Team represented the China-EU School of Law in one of the mooting competitions in the world. The team consisting of Li Ziyu, Anne Berlips, Tao Zhilin, Wang Lulu, Guo Jingjuan and Wang Chengyue trained for six months researching international arbitration and sales law to finally arrive at the final station: Vis Moot East in Hong Kong at the end of March 2019.

Hong Kong Vis Moot East competition saw 137 participating teams this year coming from the law schools of all continents. The CESL Vis Moot Team in its four rounds faced the teams from the US (University of San Diego), Thailand (Thammasat University, Bangkok), Singapore (National University of Singapore) and Japan (Nagoya University). After the number of fierce battles, the University of Amsterdam was the winner of the entire competition.

In the final stage of preparation, the Team attended the Beijing Pre-Moot organized by the Beijing Arbitration Commission (16-17 March). Student Anne Berlips was awarded as one of the best individual speakers during the Beijing Pre-Moot. On the occasion of that event, the students took also a part on a Sunday seminar with local leading practitioners, which was aimed at exposing the participants to the questions of powers of arbitrators and the common law flavors in international proceedings. Assistant Professor Monika Prusinowska moderated the second seminar panel.

Furthermore, the Team also attended the AIAC-ICC Pre-Moot hosted by the Asian International Arbitration Centre in Kuala Lumpur on 22-24 March, which gathered over 90 teams.

The Team represented a very high level of performance over the months of working on the Vis Moot case, as well collected valuable experience and advise from numerous professionals judging various stages of this competition.

The coaches of the Team this year were assistant professor Monika Prusinowska and professor Susan Wintermuth, who were also supported by the former mooties.
