From 12th to 15th July 2016, the China-EU School of Law’s (CESL) 2016 Summer Camp was successfully held on the China University of Political Science and Law’s (CUPL) Changping and Xueyuanlu Campus. 63 Chinese students from more than 40 universities – more than three quarters of them came from 211 and 985 universities – spent four days in Beijing to get a taste of CESL.
12 July was the first day. Participants gathered in the International Exchange Building to register in the morning. Students of the 2015 intake showed them around Changping Campus. In the afternoon, a shuttle bus took all the participants to Xueyuanlu Campus to participate in the Opening Ceremony of the First Legal Talent Camp of the China University of Political Science and Law, the university of which CESL is one law school. CUPL’s Vice-President Prof. Ma Huaide, the Dean of CUPL’s Graduate School Prof. Li Shuguang and the Deans of seven CUPL schools attended the ceremony.
After the opening ceremony, Prof. Zhu Weiyi gave a tasters lecture on Securities Law. Prof. Zhu explained the basics Corporate Law and Securities Law and spoke about career planning and study life at CESL.
On 13 July, the Opening Ceremony of the CESL 2016 Summer Camp was held. Chinese Co-Dean Prof Liu Fei, European Executive Co-Dean Dr Clemens Richter and CESL Prof. Zheng Yongliu welcomedthe participants, they introduced CESL’s unique teaching environment and high-level faculty and they emphasised the school’s aim to educate graduates with an understanding of the international aspects of law. Clemens Richter gave a talk on current China-EU legal issues.
In the afternoon the participants spoke with Double Master graduates Zhang Chenxu,Lin Xi,Liu Rongyuan and Li Ruifeng about their experience of studying and living at CESL. They split up in four groups to talk in depth about internships and work experiences.
In the evening, Assistant Professor Monika Prusinowska organised a movie night for the students. Erin Brockovich is an American movie depicting an environmental pollution case. Assistant Professor Monika discussed questions such as reconciliation and issues of environmental law with the students.
14 July was the third day. Organisers arranged two visits: Students from Beijing’s universities met Arnold Obermayer at the Austrian Embassy, students from elsewhere in China drove to the Delegation of the European Union to China and Mongolia to meet Luisa Wyganowski Maria, Sakura Moretto and Wendy Gao. Dr Marco Haase from the GiZ gave a lecture.
In the afternoon of 14July and the morning of 15 July, the students then were interviewed and had a final exam.
On 15 July, the closing ceremony was held on Xueyuanlu Campus. Li Zhihao from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law made a speech on behalf of CESL participants.
In the end of the ceremony, Vice-President Prof. Ma Huaide awarded the CUPL Summer Camp Certificate.
