2018-2019 International Legal Practice Class at Dentons

Under the guidance of Dr. Qi Hong, more than 30 CESL students from the "International Legal Practice" course went to Dentons Beijing office to attend the lecture on the theme of “The Lawyer, Lawyering and Development of A Lawyer” on 19 March 2019. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Zhu Yongrui and presided over by Mr. Wang Yingbo, both of whom are excellent senior partners in the law firm.

The CESL students in the lecture

At first, Mr. Zhu gave a brief introduction about Dentons. As the world’s largest law firm, Dentons forms agile, tailored solutions to meet the local, national and global needs of private and public clients of all sizes in 176 locations in 78 countries. Next, he told the students about his own practical experience ini nternational commercial arbitration. Why choose to be a lawyer? From the perspective of Mr. Zhu, to be a lawyer is to do the work of “thinking globally and acting carefully”. Dealing with practical issues is similar to finding answers hidden in secret rooms. Choosing to become a lawyer is also of good taste, since people can have much fun when facing various challenges. At the same time, based on the practical environment of lawyering, and the growth of young lawyers, he spoke about several foreign cases that he had handled, andthen analysed the legal issues involved in the cases, sharing his personal experience at different stages.

After that, the students had a further discussion with two lawyers covering several topics, such as the cooperation between Chinese and foreign lawyers, the matter of training young students, and so on. Mr. Zhu said that different lawyers from a variety of countries had different ways of thinking, but that aside, we should not forget to be a “gentleman” despite most of us being inclined to pay more attention towards becoming a "warrior". Another point he emphasised was that young students must concentrate on how to improve their skills of logical analysis and legal writing. Mr. Wang holds the view that the students needed to be quite cautious upon entering the legal profession, because after all, knowledge and ability definitely play vital roles in daily work. Absorbing the enthusiasm of theseniors, the students were deeply inspired and benefited a lot from the lecture.
