Director LIU Hua introduced that WIPO, as a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for innovation and intellectual property, is a global forum for intellectual property services, policy, information and cooperation, managing 26 international treaties on intellectual property and providing a range of service systems. Director LIU Hua said that WIPO is a "gold mine" of intellectual wealth, providing five sets of "golden keys": policy platform, registration system, database system, cooperation platform and capacity building system, and is committed to building a balanced, inclusive, dynamic and future-oriented global IP ecosystem. The vision is to make the benefits of IP available to all. The capacity building system of these five "golden keys" is closely related to universities and students, and WIPO helps young people to innovate and create through the provision of WIPO professional development programs, distance learning courses, university cooperation programs and summer schools. Established in July 2014, the WIPO China Office is one of the seven WIPO offices around the world and is dedicated to promoting the WIPO IP Global Service System in China and facilitating the cooperation between WIPO and various stakeholders in the IP field in China.
To enable the students to understand the daily work of WIPO, Director LIU Hua gave an in-depth explanation of the priorities of WIPO's work in China in 2023, including telling China's IP story through platforms such as World IP Day and the WIPO Global Awards, and strengthening cooperation with various stakeholders, including academia and government departments, to provide better services to Chinese users and promote the development of IP in China.
In the discussion session that followed, Director LIU Hua exchanged views with the students on IP issues related to ChatGPT, foreign-related IP work and internships in international organizations. She encouraged the students to cultivate good habits of lifelong learning and introduced them to the learning resources provided by WIPO through social media platforms such as the official WeChat and Bajia of WIPO China Office, such as WIPO China Micro Classroom, IP Summer School and related seminars. Finally, Director LIU Hua invited the students to introduce themselves one by one, present their career visions, and provided guidance on thesis writing, internships and future career direction for each student according to their specific situation.
