CESL won best memo in CIETAC

The 19th CIETAC Cup International Commercial Arbitration Moot (CIETAC Cup) was held in Beijing, from 28 November to 3 December 2021. The China-EU School of Law Team (CESL Team) won the Best Memo in the written competition and Third Prize in the oral competition.

The CIETAC Cup, organized by CIETAC, is a commercial arbitration moot competition for law schools, aiming at promoting the education of legal personnel in international arbitration and to expand the influence of arbitration in China. The CIETAC Cup is a pre-moot to the Willem C. VIS International Commercial Competition, which is held in the Spring in Vienna and Hong Kong.

The 19th CIETAC Cup attracted more than 700 participants from 75 universities. The number of teams and participants reached a new record high. The 19th CIETAC Cup attracted universities from the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, and other countries for the first time. This led the CIETAC Cup to a new stage at the international level. This was probably in part due to the fact that the competition was on Zoom.  Previous to the pandemic it was always in person.

(First Round: JIA Shuxian, LI Xiaocong)

(Second Round: KUANG Yuqian, GOU Xiaodan)

Since the Problem, which is the record used as a basis for the competition, was issued by the VIS organizers in early October, our team members fully engaged in the preparation for the competition. Team members, both oralists and researchers, worked together and had a clear arrangement of work. By the researchers' diligent information collection, they provided rich legal resources for writing the memoranda – contributing to its winning nature. Oralists worked tirelessly to analyze cases, read legal commentaries, and write the memoranda. The student coaches passed on all the experiences of the competition to the oralists, also contributing to the success of the team.

As a result of the quarantine, Professor WINTERMUTH in Germany and Assistant Professor PRUSINOWSKA in Spain guided the members remotely via the Internet, regardless of the time differences. Dr. Monty SILLEY, Executive Dean of CESL, stayed up fighting for the team despite his busy schedule.

(Third Round: CHEN Kuan, ZHAO Ziwei)

(Fourth Round: GAO Xujun, FANG Guimin)

The concern and support of teachers and peers made all the members full of spirit. Although well prepared, most of the members were taking part in the International Commercial Arbitration competition for the first time, which made them a little nervous. Under the pressure of both study and competition, our team members still achieved excellent results in the oral and written competition. Let us be proud of them!
