In order to enhance students' practical knowledge, the China-EU School of Law at the China University of Political Science and Law organized a series of lectures and invited distinguished professionals from international organizations and well-known law firms to discuss their work.
On June 19, 2020, students participated in the first lecture of this series through Zoom, with the topic: "Modern Legal World".
This lecture was given Ms. Silke Neugebohrn and Ms. Wang Jingyi, both senior associates of WZR’s China Desk. This firm’s China team has many years of experience in providing counsel to renowned international companies, answering complex Chinese legal and practical questions for clients.
Ms. Silke Neugebohrn and Ms. Wang Jingyi discussed the topics of cybersecurity law and legal technology with students. Monty Silley, European Executive Co-Dean of CESL, presided over the lecture.
At the beginning of the interactive lecture, Ms. Neugebohrn provided an online questionnaire to the students to understand their future career plans and areas of legal interest. Subsequently, Ms. Neugebohrn introduced the contemporary topics and applicable fields of cybersecurity law. She outlined the content of her discussion on cybersecurity law from three aspects: data protection, IT security and online publications. She explained how cybersecurity law is regulated by different regulations in different fields.
Regarding data protection issues in the current legislative development, Ms. Neugebohrn detailed four aspects: personal information protection, important data protection, cross-border data transmission, and data localization requirements. At present, the government has begun to examine IT security measures, mainly focusing on telecommunications services.
In addition, Ms. Neugebohrn introduced the new contemporary development of management tools and search tools used by lawyers in their work. In the past, there were a lot of paper materials to be sorted out in the office, but now the work can be handled in the form of document sharing through the network platform; in the past, collecting information required going to the library to read a large number of books, and now various online databases provide convenient a retrieval service.
Afterwards, Ms. Wang Jingyi presided over a question and answer session. With the active participation of the students, the atmosphere of this lecture became more and more vibrant.
After the Q&A session, Ms. Wang Jingyi introduced the development of the e-government platform and the convenience it can bring to students. She also explained current trends in Legal Tech.
Finally, Ms. Wang Jingyi introduced specific cases based on the content of the lecture, and asked students about these. The students engaged with the materials and actively shared their ideas. The students who gave the best answers got a variety of prizes, including the opportunity to visit and personally experience the offices of WZR in Beijing.
In the interactive session, the students also actively asked a number of questions. Both Ms. Silke Neugebohrn and Ms. Wang Jingyi gave meticulous answers based on the current situation and real practices. The lecture was highly informative and a great success.
