The China-EU School of Law participated in the Virtual Vis East Moot competition held from March 22 to 29, 2020. After extensive preparations, the team composed of Chen Weiqin, Jiang Jiayin, Ke Xi, Liu Lusheng, Yi Chen, and Zhang Shuyuan, made convincing pleadings to their panels composed of leading arbitration practitioners. The team benefitted from thorough coaching by Professor Susan Wintermuth, Assistant Professor Monika Prusinowska, and Executive Co-Dean Monty Silley.
Consistently performing much better than average, in the end four of the students ranked in the top 1/3rd of all participants and two were in the top 1/4th. It was, Ke Xi, however, that not only scored the best on the CESL team, but also distinguished herself amongst the very best in the whole competition. She ranked 3rd out of all 237 students pleading from top law schools around the world. With a total score of 277 points out of 300, she was only 1.5 points away from being the absolute best oralist (the competition’s top score was 278.5 points). Well-deserved congratulations go to her, as well as all the other CESL team members, for their fantastic performances!
As shown by the arbitrator’s scores, the combination of talent and hard work was recognized. The CESL team, though, continues to practice and refine the delivery of their oral arguments, determined to continually improve them. They are looking forward to participating in a live version of the Vis East later this year.
