Professional Training on “Public Interest Litigation” for Chinese prosecutors

On 16 November 2017, the China-EU School of Law organised a professional training with the National Prosecutors College (NPC) with 91 Chinese prosecutors from western China on the topic “Public Interest Litigation”. Civil Legal Adviser Sylvia Kubicz and Public Prosecutor Inge Gaasbeek from the Netherlands’ National Public Prosecutor’s Office in Amsterdam provided them with practical insights of their work and public litigation practices in the Netherlands.

In July 2017, China's legislature passed amendments to the civil and administrative procedure laws to allow prosecutors to institute public interest litigation. Prosecutors are allowed to file civil lawsuits against any act that compromises public rights and interest in cases that are related to the protection of environment and resources as well as food and drug safety.

The China-EU School of Law considers itself as an institution for training of legal professionals at all stages of their career. Since 2008, over 8,000 prosecutors, judges, lawyers and civil servants have participated in the school’s professional training courses. In 2017, 11 courses for 620 civil servants and 2 courses for 318 prosecutors were organised in cooperation with the NPC.
