Guest lecture by Alexis Vahlas on North Korea

Dr Alexis Vahlas from the University of Strasbourg, France, gave a guest lecture on the latest UN Security Council Resolution on North Korea at the China-EU School of Law. “Does North Korea have the right to become a nuclear power?” was the question he discussed with over 30 students on 14 September.

Interestingly, in the course of his lecture, Dr Vahlas introduced the variety of legal arguments opposing, but also supporting the moves on the side of North Korea. The discussion involved issues such as the UN Security Council decision-making system and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Dr Alexis Vahlas is an Associate Professor of Public Law at the University of Strasbourg. He is a director of the Master’s-Level Diploma on European Security and International Stability (SESI) and a research director at the French graduate school “École nationale d'administration”, where he also teaches classes for foreign diplomats. In the course of his work and research he has visited more than 90 countries and numerous crisis areas, including Sudan, Kosovo and Crimea.
