Principal Advisor of DG Justice visits CESL

Paul Nemitz, Principal Advisor of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers, met with Prof. Shi Jianzhong, Vice President of the China University of Political Science and Law, Dr Clemens Richter, European Executive Co-Dean of the China-EU School of Law, and further officials at the China University of Political Science and Lawon 17 May. Mr Nemitz was accompanied by Christoph Pohlmann, Resident Representative in Beijing, and Christoph Karg, Project Manager, of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation Beijing Office.

Shi Jianzhong informed Nemitz about recent developments at the China-EU School of Law. With the strong support of both the European Union and the Chinese government, the school has educated around 600 young legal talents since its establishment in 2008. He also expressed his hopes, that after the 10-year anniversary in 2018, the European Union will continue to support this flagship project of Chinese-European legal education, research and professional training.

Paul Nemitz acknowledged the law schools important position. After the meeting, he gave a lecture on “Why Protect Privacy and Personal Data in the Digital Age” to more than 20 CESL students. Nemitz introduced the basic principles of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to them, illustrating the topic with many examples. He also discussed practical questions of data protection and enforcement with the students.
