Students learn about China's new Oversea NGOs law at Dentons LLP Beijing Office

On 17 October 2017, 42 students who have selected the course on Nonprofit Organisations went to Dentons Beijing Law Firm. Niu Yue, who is a partner at Dentons, lectured on the practice of oversea non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in China.

First, Niu Yue introduced the laws on oversea NGOs and its practical implementation since it became effective on 1 January 2017. This new law requires all NGOs which were established outside mainland China such as foundations or think tanks to register with the PRC Ministry of Public Security before conducting any activities within mainland China. In the class, Niu Yue used Socratic methods to led the students to think through some difficult issues with regard to the implementation of this new law. Later the students were give two case scenarios for class discussion.

The students also visited the firm offices during the break. Dentons is a multinational law firm. With approximately 7,700 lawyers, it is the world's largest law firm by headcount. Dentons has more than 145 offices in over 60 countries. The Nonprofit Organisations course taught by Dr Qi Hong and Lawyer Niu Yue is both part of the Chinese Law Taught in English semester programme as well as part of the double masters’programme at the China-EU School of Law.
